The first permanent inhabitant hereabouts were the men who explored and prospected for oil along Snake River until 1868 when they abandoned their claims in order to go into business with private developers Later that year $2 million worth of oil was discovered just northwest of present day Boise City by Dallam Field Company but no development followed as no strikebreakers could be found for such an important industry at that time In 1875 Congress created Ada County from portions of Butte and Clearwater Counties The first post office opened in downtown Boise on December 5th 1865 under the name Ofenbarger .
