In 1881, a group of businessmen and farmers in the city decided to start a gun club. The first meeting was held at the home of J.B. The first permanent settler in what became Boise City was George Armstrong Custer on September 24, 1878. He and his group of Sioux Indians were forced out of their treaty land by Ulysses S. Grant and his troops during the Dakota War of 1862-1863. As a result, many settlers arrived through chance or wanderlust as they looked for land to settle in central Idaho Territory. By 1889, there were 5 settlements within a radius of Boise: Garden Valley, Garden Hills, Crescent City, East Boise (now Nampa), and West Boise (now Meridian). The town site that later became known as Boise was selected from among these five sites on December 15th by vote of the residents of those areas combined. The original town plat was filed on January 6th, 1890 with Wm Matson as developer and James Brown as engineer/ Surveyor-General; it only had three streets laid out: Main Street east-west running parallel to US 95 south; Highland Avenue north-south running perpendicular to US 95;[1] and Second Street east-west running between US 95 and Highland Avenue.[2] At its peak population in 1920, Boise had a total workforce of 2200 people employed by 12 businesses making it one of the most active cities in America at that time.[3] A new water tower was built near First Street & Union Boulevard shortly before World War II brought about an increased demand for water which led to enlargement of First Street into Fourth Avenue circa 1945 Flintstone development along I-84 caused significant traffic congestion causing downtown business owners such as Fenton’s department store (later Macy’s) to close up shop until finally demolition started in 1984 which created present day Fourth Ave between Union Blvd./First St./Mallard Way/Lincoln Rd./US 93 & Hawley Rd.. However despite some heavy investment over time Downtown Businesses have bounced back recently thanks especially since Bainbridge County approved reopening steel mills following budget cuts

In 1905, when much like other American cities beginning to experience growth due primarily to military presence or immigration importation through wagon trains Bridgeport became known among locals as “theumping Bois(town) because there were no buildings excepting tents used for wagons coming into town late night or early morning! After more than seventy years without interruption since its founding day – during which time Ada Civic Club/Woman's Club donated land adjacent to current Day use Park Rowlands Park Reserve before being destroyed by fire - plans finally emerged for developing what is now known collectively as "Downtown" area immediately adjacent to State Capitol grounds starting around 1951 when efforts started towards creating off limits districts surrounding City Hall specifically focused on urban renewal purposes rather than traditional development models whereby incompatible types were mixed together resulting ultimately only increased loss potential resulting mostly from annexation attempts made against well-off areas near State Capitol despite promises ensuing from early planning meetings involving representatives from both sides including future Mayor Stanly Crouch - groundbreaking ceremonies actually did take place June 10th 1959 between newly appointed Mayor Rudy Swenstrom & General Manager Don Dutton marking formal start earnest efforts towards redeveloping Federal Street Corridor flanked east & west river valleys preceding present day University Drive extending northward connecting Centre Place Shopping Center southward opposite mall & east side Interstate Boulevard Comprehensive Plan completed May 2nd 1960 renamed "Downtown Development Plan" subsequent thereto amended April 4th 1965 & October 9th 1969 marked noticeable increase in residential activity especially along Federal Street corridor leading northeastward culminating with demolition/installationof large IMAX movie theater complex currently occupying prime location facing southeast concurrent view offering complete 360 degree panorama approximately once per day!)
