The Blackfoot people are a Native American people who live in the Idaho Panhandle. The tribe is descended from the Palouse and Klamath tribes. The Blackfoot language is spoken by about 6,000 people. The first Europeans to visit what is now known as Idaho were traders and trappers who crossed the Great Lakes in search of fur trade items. In 1806, Russian explorer Vasilii Morozov explored what is now southeastern Idaho and named it after his homeland, Russia. By 1819, most of present-day Idaho had been organized into districts under the jurisdiction of Moscow City. In 1872, gold was discovered in Northern California but no one knew how to extract it so Mining Commissioner George Armstrong decided to explore for gold in Central Idaho instead. He sent Lieutenant James Hutton with a party of men overland to prospect for gold near where the Blackfoot lived on July 23, 1872. On November 15, 1872, General George Akeley led an army of 710 soldiers north from Boise to assaultgold mines at Gold Nugget Hill on account of their potential discoveries there. After two days' travel they reached an area called Goldfield campground on December 5th but could not find anyGold nuggets because the soil was too soft for mining gear to detect them! (This event happened about 100 miles south of today's Blackfoot Village.) Akeley then ordered Captain John Custer and his unit (the 2nd Cavalry)to march back eastward across mountains that blocked their route so they would never find any more gold until they returned home! This ; adventure is still commemorated annually by Custer's Tomb at Fort Riley National Military Park northwest of Topeka.). After finding no gold worth extracting in central or southern Idaho he abandoned his exploration efforts and returned home; this event marked the end of western mining interest in central America. While some later Mormon settlers did exploit nearby deposits such as coal mine workings at Lost Creek Canyon (now known as Milk River), these events ultimately left central Idaho without significant commercial development during most of its history although small amounts continue be mined today..
