The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans who lived near what is now Ammon. By 1885, however, most of the area had been acquired by settlers from Utah and California. The first residents were Scottish immigrants who arrived in 1887. They began trading goods with local tribes and built a mill here that became known as "The Mill at Ammon." During World War II, production at The Mill at Ammon took advantage of wartime shortages of materials such as steel and aluminum. In 1945, The Mill closed down due to competition from new mills operating in nearby cities such as Boise and Twin Falls. However, it reopened two years later under new ownership and continued to produce optical products until 1970 when it went out of business again due to competition from newer mills located further away from population centers. In 1978-79 United Optics reopened The Mill at Ammon after being closed for many years due to bankruptcy issues caused by overproduction during the late 1970s recession concurrent with technological advancements that made quality optics increasingly difficult to achieve without expensive equipment or high levels of skilled labor requirements
