Ammon, Idaho is a small town in the Sawtooth Mountains of eastern Idaho. It was founded by Mormon settlers in 1868, and became an agricultural center after irrigation systems were built there in the late 19th century. The town has a population of about 2,500 people as of 2010. Ammon's history is interconnected with that of its nearby neighbor, Boise. The first permanent inhabitants of what is now Ammon were Mormons who arrived in 1868 to homestead on the rim of Thesis Lake. They named their new settlement for their leader, Brigham Young, Jr., because he had been absent from Utah during theduring which they had discovered the area around Thesis Lake. By 1870, most of these early residents had left for other parts of Idaho Territory due to competition from gold seekers and other pioneers who found land east of Thesis Lake more promising. In 1872, Brigham Young directed his followers to re-settlement at White Sands Fork (now part of Boise). This group included many local ranchers and farmers who chose to move west because they believed that access to irrigation water would make them successful farming operations. When railroads began construction through this area in the 1880s, these farmers became railroads' main customers and lost much ground to competing growers east of Thesis Lake. In 1902, when Ammon became a city limits post within Boise County, it was one among several towns annexed into that county during its annexation process by Boise City Council decree on December 12, 1901 In 1907–9 two fires destroyed over 100 buildings in Ammon; no injuries occurred as a result but some demolitions took place later that year while properties were being rebuilt following those fires In 1912–14 five more fires destroyed over 150 buildings; only three injuries occurred as a result At this point all but one building in downtown Ammon had been replaced or renovated since incorporation . In 1916–17 fire destroyed nineteen buildings; four injuries occurred as a result But again no injuries resulted from either fire
Ammon was founded in 1874 by George Stephenson and named for the biblical figure Abram. The town is located in the Snake River Valley, about 25 miles west of Boise. Ammon's population reached 5,000 in 1905, and it became a city in 1907. In 1922, the Idaho Legislature renamed the city to Ammon after Don Ammon, a rancher who donated land to the town.
