The first permanent settlements in what is now Idaho were made by Englishmen under the auspices of the fur trader George Vancouver in 1799-1800. In 1825, Jens Christensen and his brother Lars founded the trading post of Fort Hall with a fur trade monopoly from Great Britain and soon became one ofIdaho's most important settlement points due to their access to eastern Oregon country and the potential for gold mining. In 1857, James Wickersham erected a dam on Snake River at present day Boise City to create irrigation water for nearby farmlands and support Wickersham's new Mormon mission. After years of construction and litigation by locals over rights to use the river's waters, it was finally completed in 1865; today it forms part of US-2 (the main routing between Boise and Salt Lake City). The Post Office at Ammon opened on July 15th 1870; it was closed on October 1st 1975 due to mergers with other towns in that county. The first mail carrier arriving here was General James Atherton who came via Bend but wasn't able to deliver because he had been ordered back east before reaching his destination proper; this order arrived while he was en route via Seattlepacked into wagons across Snake River Canyon waiting for him upstream at Council Bluffs! ammonidah
