Ammon, Idaho is a small town located in the Snake River Valley of eastern Idaho. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Ammon were the Hidatsa who built their village on the east bank of the Snake River about 890 A.D. They were followed by the Crows and other tribes until around 1870 when white settlers arrived and changed much of what had been done before. The town was named for Moses Young Ammon, an American missionary who lived in Russia during 1847-1851 and preached Christianity to Native Americans there. He also founded a school here in 1852 which became one of Idaho's two high schools, along with Portland High School (now Boise State University). In 1903, Ammon got its own post office which continued to serve until it closed in 1959. Today, you will find a few businesses open up just outside of town limits that offer services such as ice cream or grocery shopping; however, most residents still rely on agriculture as their main source of income. In addition to farming and ranching activities, some residents also operate logging camps or quarries nearby for providing local employment opportunities for lumberjacks and miners who come through during summer months while construction projects are taking place elsewhere in the valley...
