Before becoming a statehood destination—and later an international center for education and business—Hawaii was known as an agricultural backwater with few paved streets or industry other than growing coconut trees and making pineapple spears from fresh fruit brought down from the Isla de la Muerte (Island Of Death). But progress began with missionaries coming through on their way west during what is now known as The Gold Rush period in 1849-1852; this led to increased trade with nearby countries such as China and Japan due to discoveries along Alakaha Strait east of Hawai'i Island
