Red Dot Sight History The first red dot sights were developed by the US military in the early 1960s. The earliest red dot sights were designed to be used with rifles that had a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail, which allowed them to be attached to other firearms using standard hardware. These mounts typically consisted of a dovetail rabbet on one side and a simple screw connection on the other. The use of red dots as target sighting devices was first reported in 1967 when Major General James S. Gavin used them on rifle troops during Operation Neptune's Spear in Vietnam. In 1968, a new type of Red Dot Sight called the MOE (More Aggressive Enlarged) was released by Lockheed Martin for use on assault rifles and handguns that featured an enlarged viewfinder and higher magnification than earlier models. This type of sight was later renamed the Red Dead Redemption 2 MOE after its release in 2019 for use with games such as Red Dead Redemption and Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto series.
