Gun sights have been a part of Hawaii's landscape for over a hundred years. When the first settlers arrived, they brought with them their shotguns and rifles which were soon used to hunt game and defend against threats on the island. The early firearms sights that were utilized in Hawai'i were simple designs, most likely fashioned from materials available at hand. As time passed, however, improvements in technology led to more efficient and reliable gun sights. Today, Hawai'i boasts some of the best-qualitygun sights in the world! The earliest sighting devices utilized by Hawai'ians were crudely fashioned stones or pebbles placed upon a flat surface to help shooters aim their weapons. These rudimentary devices did not survive into modern times, but examples of later sighting devices are still extant today. One such device is an old map target sight dating back to 1875 which was used by Captains John Aoki and David Richardson during Operation Hailstone (1895-96). Another example is an ancient redwood crossbow stocks sight dating back to 1785 which was used by Captain James Cook during his exploration of Polynesia (1779-1792). Today's firearm sights are built from various materials including aluminum, brass, fiberglass, gold plated steel, plastic and glass. Each type of sighting device has its own set of advantages and disadvantages when it comes to accuracy and range performance. Some common features found on firearms sights include windage adjustment knobs (WACs), front post or rear adjustable turrets (ARPTS), illuminated reticle systems (IRS) and night vision capabilities. The Hawai'ian gun sights industry began in the early 1800s, with a few local manufacturers making rudimentary iron sights. By the late 1800s, there were several established companies manufacturing sophisticated iron sights for handguns and shotguns in Honolulu. By 1910, the Hawa'ian Pistol and Shotgun Manufacturing Company had become one of the leading firearms manufacturers in Hawaii. The company continued to produce high-quality firearms until 1966.

Oahu, the most populous and diverse of the Hawaiian Islands, is a volcanic island located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The island forms the eastern edge of the Kaua'i Peninsula and is surrounded by waters that are both tropical and cold. The climate on Oahu varies depending on its location within different elevation ranges, with warm to cool climates found near the coasts while colder climates can be found inland. The highest points on Oahu are Waianae Mountain at 8,815 feet (2,853 meters) and Haleakala Mountains at 9,023 feet (2,848 meters). The first Europeans to visit Hawai'i were Captains James Cook and Samuel Wallis in 1778. Cook's voyage was part of an effort to find a way across open ocean to Japan through which trade could be established between Asia and Europe. On his third trip as captain in 1803-04 he discovered Elua Island—the first landmass discovered by Europeans on Hawai'i. From this discovery came many names for Hawai'i: "Hawaii" was given to Captain Cook's assistant Samuel Wallis during his next voyage; "Elua" was also given to him by Captain Cook. In 1840 King Kamehameha I granted ownership of all but two islands in Hawaii—Oʻahu and Niʻihau—to European missionaries under pressure from a U.S.-Russia alliance that had been building for years. With American attack against Japan imminent in 1941 Hawaiian planes carryingêt developed strategic bombing raids against Japanese targets throughout the islands starting September 27th 1941 until December 15th when Japanese bombers destroyed Pearl Harbor killing more than 2-3 million people including over 70% of Hawaiians! The events leading up to Pearl Harbor have been debated extensively with no consensus reached as to whether or not they were actually causes or effects of World War II. After Pearl Harbor there was much concern among some Americans about potential war with Japan so President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's Combined Fleet into action against Pearl Harbor without warning any other nation or military organizations about their plans; this order has come known as "the sneak attack". This move allows Admiral Yamamoto complete control over naval forces operating in waters adjacent to Honolulu so he could strike at any time without fear of retaliation from other countries who may have been angered by America’s raid on their navyyard yards outside Tokyo Bay
The first Hawaiian islands, Kaua'i and Niʻihau, became part of the United States after the Treaty of Paris in 1846. The islands were organized as a territory of the United States in 1959. After Hawaii's Admission to the United States in 1959, it was an unincorporated territory of the US until its admission as a state on January 3, 1959.
