Despite these difficulties, during World War II Hawaiians played an active role in fighting for American involvement against Axis Germany and Japan. After Japan's defeat both countries agreed to returnHawaii to American control in 1945; however, due to cultural differences no formal annexation took place. During this time, many famous military figures such as MacArthur and Dwight Eisenhower were stationed here including Operation Magic Carpet which saw American forces invade mainland Japan during 1945. After World War II ended, Honolulu experienced growth due to increasing tourism thanks to its many attractions such as Waikiki Beach (the most popular spot on the island). Additionally, new hospitals and businesses began opening up throughout downtown Honolulu after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005; this helped create a more vibrant downtown scene that still remains today!
