The Woodstock Telescope was one of the first scopes in Georgia. It was built in 1897 by Dr. George Washington Cushing and Mr. J. H. Atkinson, two prominent gentlemen from Woodstock, Georgia. The telescope was used for astronomical observations until 1922 when it was sold to the University of Georgia and renamed the Upson Observatory. In 1951, it went through a renovation that added new optics and changed its name to the Peabody Museum of Natural History's Ostrobothnia Telescope before being donated to the university in 1978 and renamed again as the Woodstock Observatory.

The first permanent settlers in what is now Woodstock were three families who arrived in 1838 from South Carolina. In 1841, an act of Congress designated the townships of Roswell and Commerce within Macon County as separate counties, allowing for more rapid growth of Woodstock and other nearby hamlets. In 1864, during the American Civil War, General John Ewell's Confederate army occupied Woodstock while it was under Union control. When Union forces arrived to retake the town on April 9th, 1865, they found all but one of the original homes destroyed by fire; many of those who had lived there before were also killed or captured. Despite this damage however, Woodstock continued to grow rapidly with new buildings being erected throughout 1865-1867 including a hospital and two churches (oneMethodist and one Baptist). During Reconstruction following Abraham Lincoln's re-election in November 1865, several general stores were built along WITHHS Road north of town - these stores became known as "the red brick mills". By 1870 most of the businesses had closed down due to competition from newer settlements that had sprung up around Atlanta since Reconstruction ended; however some remaining businesses such as a grocery store still functioned into the early 21st century. In 1893 local entrepreneur Jno Kern donated land east of town on which he built what would become Georgia State University; today university property forms much of eastern Brookhaven Park near campus entrances on I-85/I-040 southbound and eastbound lanes respectively
