By 1865, however, Atlanta had replaced Woodstock as the capital of Georgia; and soon after Woodstock's demise as a vibrant community., its memory would be preserved through annual gatherings called "Woodstock Festivals."
On October 1, 1877, a group of 11 farmers and their families gathered at the old Methodist church on Woodstock place for what would become known as the first "Woodstock Festival." The event was held to celebrate new beginnings and promote local agriculture. The festival attracted people from all over the state, including some of the biggest names in country music.
