Gun parts history in Woodstock, Georgia began with the first firearms being made in the town in 1881. The town was founded on a small farm by two men named Guy and John Griggs. It had four stores and twelve businesses. By 1922, there were twenty-four businesses in the town. Gun parts manufacturers include A.B. Hill & Sons (1892), Wm Ladd & Co (1911), Ector Manufacturing Company (1916), Metropolitan Machine Works (1920), American Arms Corporation (1922) and Sturmgewehr Gesellschaft von Deutschland e.(1929). The first handgun to be made in Woodstock was a shotgun called the “Fowler” which was created by local farmer George Fowler in 1881. The first rifle that was made here was called the “Tommyhawk” which was created by John Griggs Jr.. In 1911, when Woodstock became an incorporated municipality, it had four stores and twelve businesses including three gunsmiths who manufactured handguns, shotguns, rifles and pistols respectively. One of these companies is mentioned above as A.B. Hill & Sons which continued manufacturing handguns until 1921 when they produced motorcycles instead of firearms again until their bankruptcy in 1932.# In 1916 Wm Ladd & Co., a gunparts manufacturer from Decatur County GA., produced what is considered one of America's first .45 caliber automatics called "Winchester Model 98". This weapon quickly gained notoriety for its accuracy due to its use on movies such as "Gone Withthe Wind" (#1 movie at US box office for 1942) and "Sergeant York". Winchester also produced assault rifles starting with the model 1903 chambered for 7mm Remington Magnum #2a cartridge known as the ".30-06 Springfield." These weapons had extremely high rates of fire due to their primitive design which allowed them to chamber rounds up to 350 yards!
