In May 1969, Woodstock was a small town in the state of Georgia. It had only a population of around 1,000 people and was known for its annual music festival which took place in early July. The festival drew international attention and helped to revive the struggling town. The first edition of the Woodstock Festival took place on July 4th, 1969. There were only about 25 people who attended the event. However, it soon grew into a massive free-for-all where many famous artists performed. Some of the performers include The Who, U2, Queen Latifah, Sly Stone and more. During the next edition of the festival, which took place on July 5th and 6th, 1969, there were over 50 thousand people attending. This made it one of the largest rock festivals ever held in America at that time. In total, there were several editions of the Woodstock Festival which took place between 1969 and 1978.
The first permanent settlement in what is now Woodstock was made in 1785 by a group of farmers from Georgia and Tennessee. The community bloomed during the next decade as many people came to seek new opportunities in the newly formed United States. By 1810, there were more than 100 residents living in the small town. In 1812, the town's first school was created and soon afterward, it became a center for music and entertainment. The town continued to grow during the 1830s as more businesses opened up and more people migrated to its streets. During the 1840s, Woodstock experienced a period of growth that saw it become an important commercial center. Businesses such as grocery stores, banks, hotels, theaters and breweries flourished on Woodstock's streets. However, at this point in its history, Woodstock began to experience negative consequences due to its high population density and lack of infrastructure. This led to problems with transportation and fire prevention; both which caused significant losses for local businesses. In 1851, after years of effort by local leaders and citizens, Woodstock was incorporated into the city of Atlanta as part of a larger movement designed to improve business conditions throughout Georgia's capital city. This move helped spur development within the small town while also creating new opportunities for residents. Over time however, some members of the community decided that they wanted their own version of Atlanta – one that was closer to their homes but still had access to all that Atlanta had to offer. As result, tensions began building between those who remained in Woodstock and those who dreamed of becoming "the new Atlanta." In 1870s-1880s various attempts were made by local officials (mainly businessmen)to merge both towns into one municipality but no success occurred until 1895 when Mayor Herschel Judd finally suggested creating a single district called "Woodstocks" withinAtlanta City Limits thereby combining both towns' resources into one entity under one roof - something which would finally happen two decades later when Mayor John Lindsay announced plans for a combined city/town government known as "Atlanta City Council". On January 1st 1898 , following much debate over whether or not it should be named after either King George III or Queen Victoria (due primarily to geographic differences), voters overwhelmingly chose King George III over Queen Victoria by an 82% margin! The name stuck...although most locals still refer themselves simply as "Woodstocksians" today!
