Woodstock, Georgia is a small town located in Bulloch County, Georgia. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. From its creation in 1814 until it was destroyed by fire in 1969, Woodstock served as the seat of government for Bulloch County. The town was founded by James Gadsden and his brother John Gadsden on a tract of land that they purchased from the Cherokee Nation. The site chosen for Woodstock was on an alluvial plain between two mountain ranges, only twenty-five miles from Savannah. The original settler's home had to be constructed over a period of three years due to lack of materials and financial difficulties. The first store built in Woodstock was called Gadsden's Store and it operated from 1821-1827. In 1828, the county seat moved from Athens to Woodstock after Athens became too crowded with settlers coming up from Alabama and Tennessee. In 1865, Confederate General Benjamin Butler visited Bulloch County while on campaign against the Union army under General Ulysses S Grant. When Butler learned that the local courthouse could not keep up with his military superiors' needs for supplies, he ordered its destruction instead. Even though few buildings were destroyed outright – most likely due to damage sustained during battle or storm – Butler's order left a lasting impression on many residents who would later visit Woodstock during Reconstruction period efforts to reintegrate former slaves into society. In 1969, when fire destroyed much of downtown Atlanta due to arson by young people associated with the black power movement, anger quickly turned into sadness as memories of old days atwoodxGA came back fresh in their mind and hearts once again
