The name of Winder comes from the Cherokee word wen-dera meaning "place where the wind plays." The first settler in Winder was John Sallis who came to this area in 1821. It wasn't until 1839 that a school was built in Winder and it didn't open until after the Civil War. In 1865, Winder had 1 post office and 11 residents. After Reconstruction, many businesses closed because of high taxes. However, by 1923, there were 5 stores and 45 residents. A fire destroyed most of the community on October 28th of that year and only 3 people remained when it burned down again two years later. In 1930, a grocery store opened in town which lasted until 1951. After that time, the only business left was an auto garage which closed in 1984. Today there are just 2 residences remaining and one business left open which is called "The Old Mill".

Winder is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. It was founded in 1834 by Alexander Winder and his family. The town became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1959. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,898. In 1834, Alexander Winder and his family moved from Muscovy, Russia to what is now Winder. They were the first white people to live in the area and their new land was rich in natural resources such as coal and timber. The windmill that later became known asWinderbilly was built soon after they arrived. After years of hard work, the windmill reached its full potential and quickly became a commercial success. In 1853, Alexander Winder married Anna Hilliard. Together they started farming on their new property which included present day Windermere Plantation and some other land around it. Over time, many of the original settlers from Muscovy died or migrated away due to various reasons including plagues, wars with Indian nations, and economic opportunities generated by railroad development across Georgia. However some challenges did surface during this period such as when citizens banded together against an attempted robbery in 1850; or when a group of men forcibly took over one of windermere’s mines during an agricultural Depression Era period in the 1930s Today's community has experienced significant changes throughout its history including rapid growth following World War II; difficult times during the Great Recession; periods of steady growth followed by culminating decline starting around 2009; however there have been several periods since then where community members have worked together to support each other throughshared initiatives likeMain Streetfestivals & block parties Windermere Plantation - This plantation began operation circa 1790 with about sixty families living on it at its peak . By 1830 it had grown to include almost three thousand acres with fifteen slaves working along with four hundred fifty head of cattle . During Reconstruction it functioned as both a white southerner's escape plan for fugitive slaves while also providing slave quarters for freedmen Anna Hilliard House - Built circa 1840 this well-preserved Georgian structure stands today overlooking Main Street near where Alexander Wingerd lived prior to moving into his own home next door circa 1830 The house once housed Anna Hilliard who marriedAlexander Wingerd in 1840 despite being only sixteen at the time he did so ; her husband played an important role within local society for many years before dying tragically young in 1865 aged 53 after a long life spent caring for his wife & children
Winder, Georgia was founded in 1837. It became a town in 1878 and was named for James Winder, a general during the American Revolution. The first post office was opened in Winder in 1838. In 1917, the name of the town was changed to Wheeler after Wheeler Wagon Wheel Company founder George A. Wheeler.
