John Winder settled hereabouts about eighteen24 – making him one of our earliest settlers., He made initial contact with (the Cherokee Nation) through treaties he arranged 3yrs previous., Soon thereafter he set up shop at Epps’ store where he prospered greatly because better shipping then could be procured thro’ point straight into this Country.; fronting on present day Main St., Trade happened hereabouts all tho’ times there were no mules or wagons available.– Goods brought overland via Putnam Ferry etc.– This connection between “Old Towne” as we know it today thru Captains John Wnder & his Wife Nancy is well authenticated thru Hennie Dillard’s book entitled “The History Of Old Fort Pemberton Ga., Being A Narrative Of The Transactions Connected With That Place From As far back As It Can Be traced And Including That Which Happened InThe Year 1800″ pg 214-215
