Winder, Georgia is a small town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is located about an hour and a half drive from Atlanta, Georgia and two hours from Chattanooga, Tennessee. The population was 2,859 as of the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1868 when John Winger purchased 640 acres of land east of present-day Winder. He named his new village after his wife's family name, Winder. By 1870, there were only twenty residents living in Winder. In 1875, John Winger passed away and one of his sons took over the business operations for his father-in-law. The first store opened in 1888 and by 1899 it had become a post office with three employees. By 1907, windermans had constructed their first schoolhouse which they would use until 1915 when construction began on the current school building which still stands today. The first graduating class from high school in 1909 included nine girls and one boy;later that year the community organized its own fire department through a local subscription program which continues to this day. In 1916 local businessman George Mays donated $5,000 to build a water tower which served as the nucleus forWinder's municipally owned water system today (Watertower Museum). The citizens of Winder also collaborated to finance construction of another elementary school (Old Elementary) next door to Watertower Museum as well as additional annexation into city limits during prohibition years due to popular demand for water service among their constituents! The town's proximity to Atlanta led to some growth within the community including establishment of several businesses such as A&P grocery store (1948), Tractor Supply Co.(1954), Ford dealership(1963), Winnie Mae’s Playpen(1968) and more recently Home Depot(2002). Many restaurants have also been established throughout downtown since 1994 when First Baptist Church moved into its newly completed facility adjacent to Central Parkade Boulevard south side arterial roadway/Highway 6A west side arterial roadway/Parking lot #3B across from Corner Drugstore

In 1924, the Winders moved their business to an adjacent location where they continued to produce textiles until their death in 1984. The Winders were pioneers in many ways and have left an impact on the town. For example, they are credited with helping to develop wind power as a source of energy for the town during World War II. Additionally, they donated land to help create the current Winder-Boyd Community Center which opened in 1961. Today, Winder is home to a number of businesses including several banks and restaurants.
Winder was founded in 1870 by John Winder and his wife, Sarah. The town grew quickly due to its strategic location on the Chattahoochee River. In 1875, Winder became a county seat and it remained that way until 1907. In that year, the county was divided into two new counties, Cobb and Fulton, and Winder lost its status as a county seat. Today, the town is located in Cobb County.
