WINDER, GEORGIA HISTORY Winder is a village in Dooley County, Georgia, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1824 by Methodist missionaries as an agricultural settlement named Winder Grove on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. In 1828, it was renamed Winder after John Winger, a member of the first Baptist church in Georgia. In 1836, Winder became a town and was incorporated as such by an act of the General Assembly of Georgia. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1861 and replaced with a new building that still stands today. Winder had two cotton gin operations until 1840 when they were eliminated due to competition from nearby Athens and other cotton mills. A sawmill began operation in 1865 and continued until 1975; it produced over 500 tons of wood each season until 1966 when it switched to coal mining. The mill closed because of environmental concerns although parts have been preserved for use as museum exhibits including one where visitors can Operate an all- Electric Mill! There are also several small stores and restaurants located close to the mill complex which continue to serve up local cuisine despite high electric bills during peak hours!
