Winder, Georgia is a small town in the US state of Georgia. It was founded in 1837 by James Winder and his wife Lucy. The town is located on the Chattahoochee River, about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Atlanta. The population was 7,876 at the 2010 census. Winder's early days were spent furrying around with land and timber concessions from the Cherokee Nation. In 1839 he married Lucy Maynard, who had also come to Georgia that year as a teacher and writer for a local paper. They started a family and soon built up a successful business importing goods from England and other parts of Europe. By 1861 they had acquired over one million acres (400 km2) of farmland in what is now Winder County. The cotton gin became known as "the windmill" because so much of their Output went into making raw cotton items such as millinery, hats, gloves, stockings, bags, millskins- anything that could be spun quickly enough to make money off it without having to go through the process of making fabric first). In 1865 when Abraham Lincoln was elected Ulysses S Grant's Vice President Winder donated land for the new Atlanta Constitution Building which served as Grant's presidential library until 1915. In 1870 James Sibley sold his interest in the company to Hiram Harriman which led to increased production at their factory - this allowed them to build an addition that still stands today on site: The Harriman Tower (named after him).
