It was founded by George Winder in 1802 as a small community on the banks of the Neuse River. In 1886, Winder became one of the first cities in Georgia to be incorporated as a town. The city's nickname comes from its location at an altitude of 1,500 feet (500 m), which gave it "windy" characteristics during summer months. Winder, Georgia was an early cotton town in the heart of Atlanta. In 1881, the first smelter in Winder produced $1,500 worth of cotton a day. By 1898, Winder had become one of the largest cotton producing towns in Georgia. The town's blacksmiths were so successful that they became known as "The Blacksmiths of America."
Winder is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. The town center is located at the intersection of Routes 221 and 229. It lies on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The first settler in Winder was James Winder, who arrived in 1802. He built a cabin on what is now known as Main Street. In 1805, Winder married Sarah Stephens and they started to other homes around town. By 1830, most of the residents had moved to new towns in central Georgia because ofetta lack of water power for their mills that could only produce flour and cottonseed oil. In 1833, Jameson Daugherty founded Daugherty's Mill on Depot Street near where Main Street meets Depot Avenue today. The mill became one of the largest cotton textile mills in the state by 1860 when it produced more than two million pounds per year from 535 looms! Over time many businesses were established in and around Winder including A & W grocery store (now JCPenney), post office (opened November 3rd 1865), hotel (opened May 9th 1898), windmill shop (established 1886) and several churches (Church of God Mennonite since 1903). During World War II much production took place at Daugherty's Mill which produced munitions such as shells used by Allied forces during World War II; however not all products came from this mill; some items such as clothing were made here until markets could be found for them overseas. After World War II ended there was significant decline in business activity due to increased competition from neighboring towns with larger populations - although parts of Winder continue to thrive through small businesses like artisansmiths making handcrafted jewelry etc., still considered an important part of its economy today

After World War II, the population decreased as many people moved to Atlanta. Today, Winder has a population of around 100 people. John Winder was born in 1851 in England to parents who emigrated to America in 1846. He began working on his father's farm when he was just twelve years old. In 1881, John and AnnaWinder bought land near what is now downtown Winder and started building houses. By 1910, the couple had built forty-four homes. In 1922, they sold their property for $5 million dollars and relocated to Gainesville, Florida where they continued to live until their death in 1951. Their home still stands today and is used as a museum
In 1872, Winder was founded as a cotton plantation by George Washington Winder and his wife. The windmill became the town's first business, and the mill continued to be in operation until it closed in 1957. In 1875, Winder had a post office; it closed in 1959. Winder has two businesses that remain open today: the Grange Furniture store and the Waffle House restaurant. The old school was razed in 1957 and replaced with a new one; the old garage remains on Main Street. Winder is home to several churches including First Baptist Church, Methodist Episcopal Church, and United Methodist Church.
