In 2002, Winder merged with neighboring towns Decatur and Roswell to form an enlarged Winder-Decatur metropolitan area with a total population of 25,700 residents. The city's history begins in 1837 when James Winder and his brother John founded Winder on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in what is now Decatur County. At first they called their town "Winder" because there were no other settlements around that name at that time.
