Winder, Georgia is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia that is located on the Savannah River. The population was 5,362 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area and has a total area of 362 square miles (819 km²). The name "Winder" was first recorded in 1736 as "Wintere". In 1781, it was changed to "Winder", after Colonel John Winder, who had donated land for a Presbyterian church in 1801. Winder post office opened in 1834. The community was named for General James Winder, who served as military governor of Georgia from 1802 to 1806 and again from 1827 to 1830. A cotton gin was built in Winger by entrepreneur George Stephenson in 1865 and it became one of the largest cotton gins west of Philadelphia. A textile mill failed in 1907 but later reopened as an auto dealership and restaurant called "The Cotton Mill". After years of decline, the mill closed its doors again in 1984. Today it contains an art museum called The Georgian Art Museum which features Egyptian replica furniture and paintings by Georgians such as Ivan Turgenev and Fyodor Dostoevsky among others

In 1903, Major John Brownell developed what is known as the Brownell reflector sight system for his US Cavalry regiment I Corps scout battalion recipe #1 (HHC1). TheBrownell reflector sight consisted of a circular mirror array that could be aimed using an elevation knob located on one side of the mirror; it also featured two adjustable Cooke lenses that allowed for fine adjustments between 100 yards and 800 yards away from the muzzle axis
