Despite these efforts, violence against civilians continues to occur in Winder. In 2011, gunman Michael Simpson shot and killed five innocent bystanders during a rampage inside a truck stop in Phenix City, Alabama

Winder is a small town in northeastern Georgia, United States. It is located on the Cumberland River, east of Chattanooga and west of Savannah. The population was 5,512 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Winder was James Winder, who arrived in 1796. By 1800, there were about seventy-five people living in Winder. In 1811, a post office was established at Winder; it continued to be used until 1836. In 1835, the town became part of Dalton County. In 1863, General Robert Ewell's army passed through Winder on its way to Petersburg during the Civil War. Many businesses in the town closed because of this event; however, many residents still survived and started new businesses after the war ended. Winder was originally named "Nodder" after Colonel George Washington Doddridge (1795-1868). Doddridge had been an officer with General Andrew Jackson's army during the Creek War (1802-1803). He later purchased land around what is now Winder and founded what would become known as Doddridge County in 1827. A post office called "Winder" was established in 1830 by John Dillard; it continued to be used until 1865. In 1865, Dalton County merged into newly created Fulton County; therefore, "Winder" no longer existed as a post office name within that county. In 1870s and 1880s, windmills were built near present day Winder for grinding cornmeal for local consumption or export to other parts of Georgia and Tennessee (the mills ceased operations by 1888). Grain elevator buildings still remain standing today along Withlacoochee Drive just south of town limits—these structures once processed milling flour from larger fields across Chattahoochee River near Rome road bridge) . Cotton plantations also operated out of nearby towns such as Decatur and Murfreesboro beginning turned these areas into cotton plantations due to lack of available farmland elsewhere in Georgia However most windmill sites have long disappeared due either destruction by fire or abandonment over time
Winder was founded by white men in 1828. The town was named for General Winder, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War.
