Additionally, windermans have started their own businesses such as independent cafes and restaurants as well as some major local companies such as D&D Excavators Inc., Home Depot Inc., Coca Cola Bottling Company, CJ’s Grill & Bar-B-Q LLC., Kingston Coffee Company Limited., Piggly Wiggly Enterprises Ltd., Hutchinsons Drug Store Ltd., Georgian Furniture Corporation, Cherokee Glass Works Incorporated, McKelvies Toys & Games Co., Big Daddy’s Pizza Place LLC., First Baptist Church of Winder-McCorduck County.* The history of Winder began with General James Winder and his wife Mims who came from nearby Roane CountycottonAlabama in 1785 looking for land westward into what is now Georgia* After finding no success on their initial search they returned home but soon afterward founded Westmoreland with help from prominent Englishman Walter Raleigh* When Johnston encountered difficulties during World War II while serving with Confederate forces outside Atlanta he decided to move northeastward towards Chattanooga* At this time Georgia had only just become an American state* When Johnston arrived at Chattahoochee River Bridge he ordered all supplies transported by wagon downriver so he could bypass Union troops stationed there * This event is celebrated annually by Chattahoochee Valley Folk Club as Johnston Day* Shortly thereafter Johnston moved back upriver past Union troops then Headquarters building where he made his final stand before retreating back upstream into North Carolina After the war General Joseph E. Johnston settled near present day Winder**** ****** He later became known as one of America’s most celebrated generals***** After retirement from military service he bought large tracts of land around present day Windsor**** ******* With this new property he began developing his new communitywhich would eventually become known as Winder**** ****** Over time other notable people associated with this community included Drayton Willingham*, Mrs. John Fenton*, Jethro Gibbs*, Drayton Caldwell***************************** * All original names are still used today
Winder was a small community in Baird County, Georgia, located on the banks of the Flint River. The community was established in 1853 by John Winder and his family. The first post office was established in Winder on July 9, 1853. By 1860, the population of Winder had increased to twenty-one citizens. In 1865, the town was renamed after General Ulysses S. Grant because he had been president of the United States at that time.
