Winder arrived at what is now Windermere to found his logging community after purchasing land from Cherokee Nation heirs for $8 per acre (approximately $ ). At first, helogging operations were conducted using traditional methods such as sawing logs down into planks which were then stored on ladders for delivery to mills; however, within a few years wind power became an important factor limiting how often logs had to be delivered downriver due to its high costs compared to horsepower power sources available at that time . In 1896, J D’Ange purchased 4000 acres (1 km²) of former Cherokee Nation property east of present dayWindermere and began construction on what would become his largest mill ever built – 1 million feet (305 m) long by 350 feet (100 m) wide with a floor space measuring over 1000 square feet (90 m2). Known locally as "the giant" it processed lumber from more than 50 different local trees including cedar , oak , walnut and hickory . Today it remains one of the most significant landmarks in town . The early mills also produced cheese products such as blue cheese from wild cows brought overland from eastern Georgia ; soap made from natural lemons ; maple syrup; cigar boxes; boots; saddles; wagon wheels and harnesses etc., all sold through village stores managed by men or their wives while children took care of business inside or outside the shops.. Families farmed their own food crops including corn , beans , peas etc.; hunted deer, turkey, squirrels etc.; collected rainwater for use during winter months; constructed dwellings out of sticks covered with straw bales or reeds if necessary but typically lived close enough together to support each other despite limited resources .. many people still farm today even though technology has replaced some aspects of farming but many people still live close to nature During World War I there was significant military activity taking place aroundpresent dayWindermere including artillery fire across several miles southward into neighbor's fields destroying several homes and crops .. however no injuries occurred among civilians... afterward there was heavy growth due to new development including military housing developments Also during WWI many men left home for various reasons which led to unemployment rates above 50% .... However following WWI things changed when millions were drafted into army service both north and south so industry began flowing back into town creating jobs again.... Postwar growth slowed significantly until recently due about 2000 when oil discoveries were made nearby causing increased economic development throughout much of northeast GA

In 1954, when Gwinnett County was created from portions of Fulton and Dekalb counties, Winder became an incorporated town within Gwinnett County limits; however, it remains an unincorporated community within Fulton County boundaries today. Today's economy relies heavily on manufacturing: wind turbines are one such industry that has seen significant growth over the last few decades due to their environmentally friendly practices and low environmental impacts. In addition to being an important manufacturing center for wind turbines in Georgia (and across the country), Winder also manufactures components for other industrial machines such as locomotives and cars alike.
