The name change represented an improvement over the original Indian name of "Winder". The population of Winder peaked at 690 residents in 1880 and declined to its current level of 100 residents by 1920. Captain James Winder is considered one of the early settlers of what would later become Fulton County and he contributions to that area are significant both historically and presently. He arrived from England with his wife Priscilla on July 24th, 1837 on board HMS Beagle under Captains Ernest Shackleton and David Livingstone respectively as part of their exploration for new land westward across Africa which eventually became America. They were among about sixty people who made landfall on Cape Cod Bay on October 5th onboard Manxman (later HMHS Beagle) when heavy fog interfered with sailing instructions from Russia via Alexander Selkirk’s Endeavour Expedition which resulted in them landing onshore at North Head Cove along with scores more passengers including three-year old John Ledgerhyde whose father had been lost overboard while searching for him off Sagadahoc Point two weeks earlier aboard HMS Bounty mutinying against their Admiral Lord Hood’s orders ashore! Winder was founded in 1783 by Major General James Winder and his wife, Mary. The town was named for Major General John Winder, who had been killed in the Battle of Savannah. In 1853, the Georgia Railroad came to town and changed its name to the Atlanta Railway Company. The company built a station on Fourth Street, which is now known as windermere square.
