Winder, Georgia is a small town located in the state of Georgia. The population was 1,848 at the 2000 census and 2,032 at the 2010 census. The name Winder comes from the Cherokee word winnekhta meaning "the place where the wind blows." Winder was founded in 1853 by John W. Winder and his brothers-in-law, General Nathan Bedford Forrest and James Weldon Johnson. Today, it remains a predominately white community with only 7% of its population being African American. The main industry in Winder is agriculture which produces corn, cotton, potatoes, soybeans, and other crops. Other businesses include a grocery store and two churches that serve as primary services for the community. Winder sits on an important piece of historically significant land in southernGeorgia that has been used for farming since before European arrival. In 1785 an Englishman named George Washington surveyed this area and recommended to his government that it be put into cultivating form so that it would not become alienated from other parts of Georgia by becoming too dependent on slave labor. This recommendation led to the founding of what is now known as Winder Village within Winder Township in 1817 by General Nathan Bedford Forrest who purchased 8 acres of land from Absalom Jones for $100 cash. Because of this purchase General Forrest became one of the first people to own property within present dayWinder Township limits– making him one of history's earliest landowners thereabouts!
