The name "Winder" derives from the Cherokee word "wanderer." The first settler in the area was Eli Winder, who arrived in 1824. He named his land after himself and his wife Hannah (Hannahsville) Winder. A post office called Hannahsville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community took its present name from Eli Winder on October 1, 1927. According to the 2000 US Census there were 4,868 people living in Winder proper (excludinglying villages). This number had declined to 3,968 by 2008; however it has since increased to 4,982 as of 2010 due to new construction within the boundaries of town limits and expansion outward into neighboring communities The racial makeup of winder as reported by the2010 US Census showed that African Americans constituted 22% of the population while Whites made up 78%. Hispanic or Latino residents make up 11% of the population

Winder is a town in south-central Georgia, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clarke County. Winder was founded in 1822 and incorporated as a town on June 14, 1881. It lost its status as a town on July 1, 1907 when it merged with Baldwin County to form Clarke County. The first settler in Winder was Levi Wright who arrived in 1822 from Kentucky. He built the first store and tavern in what is now Winder. In 1827, he married Polly Griggs and they had six children including Martha (1829-1912). They also operated a mill which ground flour for local consumption until about 1840 when the mill burned down. In that year, Levi Wright sold his land to James Patton and moved to Alabama where he continued farming until his death in 1865. His wife Polly died in 1912 after serving many years as postmistress of Winder. In 1881, Winder became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with Baldwin County to form Clarke County; however, its status as an incorporated town was not reinstated until 1907 when it merged with neighboring Bartow County to form Clarke County again; this merger occurred due to political difficulties between both counties over land ownership/use within their respective borders (Baldwin & Clermont Counties were part of Baker county while Clarke & Polk counties were part of Cobb county). As an incorporation town, Winder enjoyed some unique benefits such as free unlimited postage on all mail sent into or out of the community; this privilege terminated upon consolidation with Bartow County because that jurisdiction lacked an unrestricted post office service area outside of Atlanta proper! In 1892, Winder was founded on the Chattahoochee River by Daniel G. Winder and his wife, Julia. The town grew quickly, and in 1902 it became a city. In 1915, Winder was annexed by Atlanta.
