Winder is a small town in southern Georgia. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County municipality. The community was founded in 1872 by John Winder and his wife, Sarah Hinkle Winder. It was named for their daughter Winifred, who had been born in 1847 in Waldo County, Maine. The Winders were early settlers in what is now Winder. In 1889, they built the first post office there. They also grated cheese for local consumption and raised pigs and cows to provide milk for their family’s farmstead and other local businesses. In 1922, JohnWinder died suddenly at the age of 83 years; Sarah continued to operate her farm until her death in 1984 at 82 years old. In 2001, she bequeathed all of her land to the town through an act of Congress which allowed towns within Atlanta County to sell their land back to residents under certain conditions (see "Winder Town Hall" on page 6). Today, much of that original land still remains undeveloped and is used as part of Georgian Trails Regional Park which includes hiking trails accessible from both town center and neighboring rural areas where windermans once resided as well as playgrounds and a library/museum dedicated to local history (www.windermanewscenter.org).
