Despite this move away from its original purpose as a center for commerce and culture, Wayross has held onto many of its traditions including its wide variety of restaurants and bars (including several international locations), its annual parade which features local talent such as jugglers and poets/, and its long list of historical landmarks including the Forrest House which served as headquarters during World War I., When President Franklin D. Roosevelt visitedGA on April 15th 1933 he made an appearance at downtown Waycross where he stopped at the Forrest House before attending a baseball game betweenWWII veteran's teams from Atlanta (the Yankees)and Chattanooga (the Grays). It was established in 1819 as a trading post on the Savannah River by Captain David Macon and his partners, James Dooley and John Gregg. Waycross became an active community during Reconstruction and played an important role in the development of Atlanta. Afterward, Wayross experienced economic decline and declined to regain its former prominence until recent years when it has become known for its cultural significance and historical attractions. Waycross was founded on December 22nd, 1819 by captain David Macon with his partners James Dooley and John Gregg as a trading post on the Savannah River by way of Trenton (New Jersey). At first it served as a stopover for travelers coming downriver from Cherokee Nation land east of Augusta. In 1825, Captain Macon commissioned construction of a permanent building at what is now Main Street which served as his Trading Post office and store house until 1830. By this time, Waycross had developed into an lively commercial town with several stores, two hotels (the Beaumont House hotel built 1827-29 by merchant George Beaumont), four churches (Methodist Episcopal Church built 1828; Baptist church built 1840; First Congregational Society building erected 1865), three schools (academic school opened in 1827; high school opened in 1889), two wagons wheeled transportation service connecting all these institutions together (the Wagon Wheel road ran through downtown from Main Street to Wagon Wheel plantation near present-day Gadsden Avenue), two steamboats running passenger services between Waycross portage on the Savannah River opposite Fort Fisher Landing on Hwy 17 south to Brunswick landing on Hwy 1 north via Pee Dee river then upriver to Valdosta Ferry Landing) plus many other businesses providing patronage for local artists who produced etching plates or lithographs depicting rural life within easy reach of Atlantaians living in their homes or visiting these activities along country roadsides or riverside settlements such as Milledgeville/Decatur/Brunswick/Savannah/Gulfport etc. In 1830 Captain Macon sold his business interest including main square to trustees under whose direction development proceeded rapidly with new buildings being constructed constantly throughout until 1886 when fire destroyed most of downtown followed by tornado that leveled much of town including Captian's Store building which stood north side door only remaining part inside still standing today roofless although wallpapered over leaving just entrance area exposed core walls have been preserved largely original condition giving them added character unique among similar structures surviving anywhere Captain DavidMacon descendant continues business today direct descendants are Mrs Pegram & son David

The town developed as a cotton-growing center, and saw many political events during the antebellum period. In 1864, Waycross was acquired by Georgia Railroad Company, which changed it into an incorporated municipality. The city experienced significant growth during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s due to its rich natural resources, as well as its location on the railroad route connecting Atlanta with Savannah. However, during World War II the city lost much of its population due to military relocation. After the war Waycross experienced another period of growth until the late 1980s when it began to decline again. Today, Waycross is a small community with few residents remaining who are mainly involved in local businesses or government service
