The first settlers in Waycross were primarily farmers who opened up land around what is now downtown in 1825. By 1860, Waycross had a population of just over 100 people and was known as "the little village on the Chattahoochee." In 1865, Waycross became an incorporated town when it annexed portions of Phenix City and Snellville. In 1924, Waycross merged with neighboring Reynoldstown to form one large city. When the city limits were expanded in 1960, all but 3 of its original streets were consolidated into a singleblock thoroughfare called Commerce Street. Today, Wayross offers an interesting mix of historical landmarks from both eras: The Old Courthouse (built in 1825), which still stands today; The Masonic Temple (dedicated to Freemasonry in 1865); and The New Courthouse (completed in 1924). There are also several restaurants and bars along Commerce Street including Ponce de Leon's steakhouse and Joe's Pub & Grille. There has been much growth recently throughout downtown with construction taking place on two blocks between State Capitol Square and First Baptist Church/The Methodist Episcopal Church Building across from Millennium Park - this has included new businesses such as Bi-Lo Foods (known for their Fresh produce) as well as residential development such as Live Oak Place Apartments which offer great views from many floors to Interstate 20 outside!

The Waycross area was one of the most important slave-holding areas in Georgia. The area was home to over 100,000 slaves and it is believed that up to 50% of the population of Waycross originated from Africans.
