Waycross, Georgia is a small town located in the Appalachian Mountains of central Georgia. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. Waycross is home to the Waycross State Museum and the Waycross Baptist Church. The town also has a large agricultural sector that produces hay, cotton, apples, and other crops. The name "Waycross" comes from an early settler's claim of being on a crossing of two watercourses called "Waikshaw" and "Woolridge". The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1811 when James Wilkinson built a cabin on White Oak Point near present-day Waycross. By 1830, 10 white families had moved to what is now Waycross from five settlements in eastern Georgia. In 1835, General Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land west of present-day Waycross from David Wilkes for $5 per acre. This land became known as Forrest's Forest because it was used for hunting and farming purposes. In 1836–37, Elijah Boren founded Athens County with 1,500 acres (500 ha) of upland along the Chattahoochee River east of Atlanta that he bought from Robertulton McDowell. In 1840–41 Confederate forces burned down part of Boren's farm while he was away fighting in Alabama; this event is commemorated by the Brickyard Hill Farm Drive intersection off Interstate 85 just outside Damascusville which bears his name. By 1860 there were 14 white residents living in WayCross; nine teachers and six students at Athens County Agricultural College; eight slaves working on plantations around Atlanta; one black family residing on Indianola Road northeast of downtown; three horse teams pulling wagons carrying goods upriver to appertain to traders at Fort Monroe; four farmers who cultivated corn and beans on their own homes or barns between Maytime and Octobertime during harvest season before selling their produce to local merchants; two men manufacturing wagons drawn by oxen across country roadsides for transportation purposes—this group represented about 60% of all white residents in rural areas throughout southern Georgia during this time period One reason why many people left waypoint during these years was due to poverty: crops failed due to lack of rain or pests that could not be controlled by traditional methods such as crop rotation or fertilization with manure products purchased from neighboring farms . In 1837, the state of Georgia created Waycross as its own city. Waycross experienced some difficult times during the 1800s. It was hit by several natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods. However, the town always bounced back and became one of the most successful cities in Georgia. In 1938, Waycross was named one of the "100 Most Popular Cities in America."
