The name Waycross comes from "Wah-Koos," an Algonquian word meaning "the place where two rivers join." The town was established in 1825 by Captain James Cook as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. It became a state capital in 1907 and then an incorporated city in 1925. In 1960, it merged with neighboring Milledgeville to form the current city of Waycross. Waycross was founded by Captain James Cook and his group of traders when they arrived on the Chattahoochee River in 1825. They named their settlement after Wah-Koos, an Algonquian word meaning "the place where two rivers join." The first settler in Waycross was John Lewis who built a log cabin on what is now Park Street. He later married Anna Mundy, daughter ofRichard Mundy, one of the founders of Milledgeville. Anna Lewis ran a boarding house near Park Street until her death in 1835; her husband continued to operate it until his death in 1868. In 1827, Captain Cook's party reached what is now Waycross during their journey upriver from Marietta to find new land for England's colonies after discovering new islands off Georgia's coast during their voyage around Africa that year. When they reached Wayross Creek (now Park Street), they found fresh water there which would be important for future operations because boats could not travel upriver past Fort Gaines without running out of water or reaching hostile Indian territory downstream! Captain Cook's group stayed at Waycross for about three weeks before returning upstream to Marietta but left behind some baskets filled with goods including cloth, tobacco and cannons which were still being collected when he died less than two years later aboard HMS Discovery on October 11th 1795 while exploring along Florida's Gulf Coast! In 1814, during Andrew Jackson's invasion of Alabama and Tennessee, General John Cushing decided that this would be his opportunity to attack Mobile Bay rather than pursue Ulysses S. Grant's Army oficks due to strategic advantages over landlocked troops at Muscle Shoals Sound and Lake Cumberland as well as availability of warships off shore He ordered twelveboats loaded with supplies and men under Rear Admiral Amos Davenport south down Mobile Bay until they reached Spanish Town Point about north-northwest of Pensacola where they disembarked without incident Commodore Gideon Welles followed up soon afterwards escorting another transport vessel accompanied by two frigates carrying reinforcements including a hospital ship HMS Phaleron which had been specially designed for providing medical treatment to Confederate soldiers upon landing After reaching Spanish Town Point Cushing reported that he had met no hostile Indians but found several abandoned huts in which timber had been cut for building purposes so he anchored his fleet there until nightfall then sailed back out unobserved under cover of darkness On October 6th Commodore Welles sighted two small boats coming towards him from Spanish Town Point bearing white flags bearing the inscription "I am US Marines". As soon as he put into action one gun shot killed both pirates immediately aft who had boarded them while steering towards shore - this cleared way for American ships sailing close inshore not having any fear of pirates boarding them .
