It became an American Civil War battlefield on April 1, 1865 when Confederate General Joseph Ewell's cavalry (1862) attacked Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army under the command of Brigadier General Greenough at nearby Stone Bridge over the Chattahoochee River from east to west; Waycross was among the first towns to fall into Confederate hands after their victory over Grant's army that day. The present-day town of Waycross was laid out by David Reed in 1842 as a stop along Hwy 21A while he surveyed the future site of Savannah for land developers who would build additional slave plantations south of Atlanta. By 1845 there were already more than 2,000 white residents living in what is now Waycross; by 1860 there were 10 churches and schools in the town – including seven Episcopal parishes – and it had become one of Georgia's most important cotton-growing towns with plantations extending into adjacent counties to produce rice, indigo dyeing beans, sugar beets and other crops needed for export to Europe and America. In 1861–1862 Confederate General Pee Wee Lee's forces invaded Georgia from northward through northeastern Alabama before turning east towards Augusta downriver where they encountered Union forces led by Major General Ulysses S. Grant nearStonebridge; during this engagement some 936 men died (of which about 200 were Confederates) with nearby Fort Pulaski surrendering three days later after being surrounded and blockaded with no possibility of escape or relief until July 4 when an amphibious landing saved it; after that event Wayross became one of six municipalities within Union territory ceded outright by Confederate authorities during Reconstruction (the others being Milledgeville, Norristown Heights, Allatoona Hills, Rock Hill and Douglas).
