In 1827, Waycross became the capital of Georgia after the state's admission into the Union as a result of the American Revolution. The town experienced some growth during Reconstruction until it declined following the end of that period in 1865. However, Waycross regained its lost popularity during the late 19th century due to its status as an important seaport on the river and its location near several large cotton plantations. In 1895, Wayross incorporated as a city and remains an incorporated municipality today with a population of over 20,000 people (2013 estimate). Waycross is located at (31.766667,-82.633332). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , all land.[1] As of 2000,[2] there were 4 businesses located within 1 mile (1 km) of downtown: A&P Supermarket; Alice's Baking Company; Boulevard Cleaners & Furnishers; and Jiffy Lube oil station which closed in 2012 after 25 years on site.[3]
