The community lies on the northern border of the namesake county and its southern neighbor Clayton County. It is bordered by Howell to the north, Stone Mountain to the west and south, Catoosa to the east and northeast, and Carrollton to the southeast. The history of Waycross dates back to 1828 when it was founded as a seasonal trading post by Nicholas Wortham on what is now US-27 near present-day Waycross Road. In 1838, Wortham's son John Worthy moved his family from England to Georgia following a journey that took him through Mexico and California. He established Waycross as a permanent settlement with his own stores and tavern/cabinetry buildings which remain today within walking distance of each other on successive streets in downtown Waycross. In 1872, Captain James Dickey built Fort Dickey for Confederate forces during the American Civil War on land that later became part of Waycross Township. After Confederate capitulation in 1865, Fort Dickey fell into disrepair until it was purchased by local farmers in 1887 who restored it as a tourist attraction known as "Dickey's Hill". In 1931, Wayross Elementary School opened its doors after years of planning by then-District 1 Superintendent J C Byrd III under auspices of Little league Baseball America (LBA). The school would serve students from kindergarten through eighth grade until 2005 when competition led to consolidation among all five districts in Gwinnett County which left WayCross without an elementary school for over 10 years; however due to efforts by then-Superintendent Pramila Butler II (now superintendent) with support from Mayor Kasim Reed (at that time executive director of LBA), WAYCROSS reopened at its current location adjacent to Ivey Middle School effective September 2009 Each year since 2007 has seen new construction taking place both inside and outside OFWECO Pavilion across FROMONDALE DRIVE from downtown way cross Waycross grew quickly during World War II as many residents relocated inland because hostilities raged outside their homes The post office closed down in 1948 but was reactivated again in 1951 thanks to Operation Gather Up Post Office Day which saw citizens collecting used stamps donated by businesses throughout metro Atlanta One such effort resulted in $2 bequeathed back into the community
