In 1865, General William Troup's army destroyed Fort Donelson at Chattahoochee River Bridge,[3] opening up this region for settlement by white men looking for new land to farm after being forced out of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War. The newcomers were primarily Baptist missionaries who arrived with wagonloads of goods in order to start churches and schools.[4] A post office was established at Warner Robins in 1867, and by 1870 it had grown into an important commercial center withOver 2 dozen stores and over 100 residents serving customers through mail service, printing presses, banks (including one founded by James Gadsden), newspapers (including two papers published daily), inns/motels/ restaurants etc., until 1975 when consolidation eliminated many such businesses along with other economic forces within local government limits created today's Downtown Warner Robins business district including several universities - University Park Hospitality Services Incorporated; Turner Broadcasting System Incorporated; Gwinnett County Governmental Services Corporation; Cobb County Governments Service Corporations Incorporated; Delta Air Lines International Company Headquarters Trustee); numerous medical facilities including Grady Memorial Hospital; several research institutions including Emory University School Of Medicine;KAIST Graduate School Of Science & Technology
