At this point, both armies had lost more than 1,000 men and most of Georgia was within Confederate hands. Aftermath: In 1865, General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House without ever facing trial or beingchesed as a traitor like his predecessor (and husband) Jefferson Davis did months earlier during his “March On Washington” demonstration outside Washington D C . After surrendering at Appomattox Court House ,Genl Robert E Lee was originally scheduled for execution but changed his mind after learning about President Lincoln’s new plan for Reconstruction which would give African Americans citizenship and voting rights if they lived in America . He died naturaly 3 days later without having seen his executioner
