The Villa Rica community was founded in 1828 by the brothers Antonio and Gabriel Valdez. The Valdez family had come to Georgia from Mexico. They built a log cabin on the current site of Villa Rica, near what is now Troup County, Georgia. From this cabin, the Valdez Brothers started a small farm and started trading with other settlements in eastern Georgica County. In 1836, Gabriel Valdez married Anna Maria de la Vega y Pacheco, daughter of Don Josefina de la Vega and Don Francisco de los Reyes Pacheco. After Anna Maria's death in 1849, her husband took over the running of their house and farmstead until his own death in 1861. He bequeathed to his widow two hundred acres of land around Villa Rica which were used for farming until 1934 when they were donated to the University of Georgia by Mrs. John Waddell Vaughan as part of her estate. The first school within the Villa Rica community was opened on December 5th, 1836 by Mr. Anthony Valdez under instruction from state legislators JnoDenny Cobb and James Hogg who were also students atUGA at that time. It was not until 1840 when an addition was made to this first school building which would become known as “the White House” after President Andrew Johnson who vacationed there during his second term (1849-1851). After one year classes were offered at various locations within the villarica community before moving permanently to what is now West Campus on December 3rd 1850 by Rev Dr George Washington Payne (later Bishop) . Classes continued here until May 15th 1865 when all grades moved into new school buildings located east of campus across from present day Grady Memorial Stadium where football games are currently played
Villa Rica was founded by a group of English settlers in 1786. The town became an important center for the agricultural industry and prospered until the late 19th century. In 1885, the Georgia General Assembly voted to annex Villa Rica as part of the new state of Georgia. The annexation process caused some problems for the town, as it was located on Georgians’ land and not in California. In 1957, Villa Rica became part of Forsyth County, Georgia.
