Today, Villa Rica has a population of approximately 2200 people who live primarily within the hamlet of Fort Valley. The village has two churches: First Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church. Additionally there are several businesses including the convenience store/takeout restaurant called "The Grit" which serves local residents as well as tourists from surrounding communities; Villagers Market; Home Depot; Walmart; Post Office; gymnasium; tennis courts; and numerous other services that locals rely on for their day-to-day needs.
In 1793, the first permanent European settlers set foot on Villa Rica, now part of the city of Atlanta. The land was donated by José de la Garza to the Georgia General Assembly in 1794 and named after Governor James Robertson. John Hargrave built a small log cabin on the site in 1800. In 1802, Hargrave's son-in-law, Isaac Rossman, began to clear land for a cotton plantation. In 1805, Rossman sold his interest in the plantation to Andrew Jackson for $2,500 cash. By 1830, white residents of Villa Rica had constructed three churches and two schools.By 1840, Villa Rica had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad as fugitives seeking freedom from slavery passed through it on their way to other parts of Georgia.
