In the early 1800s, Villa Rica was a small community on the banks of the Chickasaw River in Georgia. The town had two churches and one school. The community began to grow when a group of businessmen decided to build an optical store. In 1828, they built a building that still stands today, and named it in honor of their benefactor, Sir John Evans. The first thing people saw when they walked intoSir John Evans's Optical Store were beautiful glasses and mirrors. Soon, other items such as telescopes and binoculars were available for purchase. In 1841, the store moved from its original location to what is now known as Old Town Square. It remained there until 1968, when it was destroyed by fire. Despite all of the efforts of Sir John Evans' associates, no optical products became popular enough to make him rich beyond his investments. However, his legacy lives on in Villa Rica because he helped start what is now one of America's most successful optical companies. Villa Rica is a small town in metro Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It is located on the Chattahoochee River, east of downtown Atlanta. The population as of the 2010 census was 611. The name Villa Rica comes from Spanish and means "estate on the river". The first settlers in Villa Rica were Spaniards who arrived in 1786. They began to build a log cabin on what is now known as Indian Hill. In 1802, they built a larger cabin and started to cultivate land around it. By 1830, they had built a frame house which served as their home until 1851 when they moved to their present location. In 1865, local businessman John Aiken bought the property and began developing it into an agricultural area with large houses for his workers. He named it Villa Rica after his mother's birthplace, Villena de Zaragoza, Spain. Aiken's farm became one of the largest cotton plantations in south Georgia and yielded some of the most valuable crops in America during this time period such as peanuts and rice. In 1898, he sold his farm to Drayton Gilmore for $2 million dollars which made him one of the richest men in Atlantica at that time. After World War II ended, Villa Rica experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to Interstate 85 and its ability to access resources like water and timber that were unavailable farther away. This growth led to increased traffic congestion on Highway 285 which resulted in several accidents over the years culminating with a fatal wreck involving two tractor-trailers on November 25th 2001 which killed 12 people and injured scores more In recent years there has been much discussion about development along I-85/285 corridor due to proposed shopping malls (Anchor Mall & Philips Arena), restaurants (Annual Meeting Hall), hotels (Marriott Marquis & Tollway Tower)and other potential uses for hectare or more of open space adjacent to these highways resulting in complaints by residents about loss of privacy and impact on quality of life

The first store opened in 1838 and the first school in 1840. In 1843, Wilkinson sold his ranch to Jno Crain and John Fenton. The two brothers started an agricultural business that produced cotton, corn, hay, and cattle. They also built a log cabin known as "The White House" which served as their home until 1904 when it was replaced by a modern structure.

Villa Rica was designated as a summer home for American officials and their families in 1822. The first white settler in Villa Rica was Isaac Deane, who arrived in 1824. By 1830, the community had about 100 residents. In 1840, a Presbyterian church was built and by 1850, it had 10 ministers and 300 children. In 1860, the Savannah & Western Railroad reached Villa Rica and the town began to grow rapidly; by 1870, it had 1,500 residents. In 1880-1881, Atlanta bought Villa Rica from the Georgia General Assembly for $2 million. The town continued to grow until World War II when it lost its status as a summer resort because of the war efforts.
