Villa Rica is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. In 1840, Governor Andrew Jackson transferred Villa Rica to the newly formed Cobb County (later Atlanta) County; however, due to its small population size it continued to be underdeveloped until after Reconstruction when development began again with villarica becoming an important center for cotton production during the early 20th century. After World War II, Villa Rica experienced a period of decline as many residents left for better opportunities elsewhere in America or Europe; however, recent development has revived interest in this small town that lies on a bend of the Chattahoochee River within easy driving distance of major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta and Savannah.
Villa Rica, Georgia was founded in 1733 by Captain James Robertson. The village of Villa Rica was located on a tract of land that had been given to him by the Creek Nation. In 1778, the Spanish built a fort at Villa Rica and began trading with the Native Americans. In 1802, Colonel John Moultrie established a military post at Villa Rica and renamed it Fort Gaines. The town began to grow and in 1824, it became an incorporated community under the name of Augusta. In 1834, Augusta annexed part of nearby Decatur County and changed its name to Atlanta.
