Villa Rica, Georgia is an unincorporated community in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. It lies along the South Carolina border and is east of the city of Atlanta. The population was 1,838 as of the 2010 census. Villa Rica is part of the Atlanta-Fulton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Villa Rica were French traders in 1663. In 1785, a group led by General James Oglethorpe arrived and founded what would become Augusta, Georgia on land that they had acquired from the Native Americans. The town quickly grew and by 1810 it had a population of 3,000 people. In 1812 Governor Thomas Lawrence sent Colonel John Stono with 5 companies of infantry to take possession of Villa Rica from the Cherokee Indians who had unsuccessfully opposed him for office earlier that year. After occupying Villa Rica for two months, Stono built a fortification and began trading goods with Cherokee settlers there. On November 9, 1812 Major General Andrew Jackson landed at Tybee Island on his way south to join him in Savannah for their battle against Federal forces under Ulysses S. Grant at Horseshoe Bend near present-day Roswell Army Airfield (now known as Braves Field). When he learned about the Battle of Horseshoe Bend from General Stono's lieutenant colonel garrisoned at Villa Rica Fort he ordered his unit to withdraw without fighting until further notice which they did while still under fire from indigenous warriors entrenched within their own fortifications Cemetery Hill Historic District located off Manchester Road in northeast Cobb County) A post office was established at Villa Rica on October 30, 1814., but no mail reached it because Southern mail traveled via Athens instead then going through Cobb County until December 1st when orderlies brought mailbags filled with letters being sent from Montgomery to Allatoona Valley which included one addressed to "Mrs[Anna] Lewis". Today (2006), Villarica is a census-designated place located in Fulton County, Georgia with a population of 478.
