In 1802, the United States acquired land east of the Chattahoochee River and laid out a townsite called "Gadsden". The name "Gadsden" was taken from General James Gadsden who had led an American Confederate army during the American Civil War. On July 4, 1819, US president James K. Polk awarded General Gadsden with a pension for his services as a general during that war. A post office called Villa Rica was established in 1833, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1905. In 1840, William Hartsfield built what became known as Hartsfield House on what is now Park Road in Villa Rica. He served as Mayor of Atlanta from 1841 to 1845 and helped found the city's first bank and first library. Hartsfield also donated land for Villaraigosa Cemetery which was founded in 1840 by his brother-in-law John Troup Bagley Sr.. The city limits were expanded to include present day Druid Hills and Midtown Atlanta on April 20th, 1889 when City Hall moved from Gadsden to Villa Rica following annexations by both cities into Cobb County along with other portions of Fulton County which would become part of Marietta County following passage of legislation by Governor Nathan Deal on December 12th,. On November 3rd 1920 Atlantans voted overwhelmingly to secede from Georgia and form their own state called Alabama under then governor Crampton effective November 9th1920; this act set off days of violence throughout Cobb County culminating withAtlanta's surrender on December 15th 1920 at Ponce de Leon Bridge overthe Chattahoochee River
