The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. Vidalia's history dates back to 1824 when Captain John Fenton purchased two tracts of land from the Cherokee Nation for $10. In 1856, George Washington Vaughan donated land to help support Vidalia's growth; this included part of what is now Gate Drive. In 1860, voters approved a school district which became operational in 1862; it served grades 1-8 until 1954 when it was merged into the nearby Dalton School District On July 14, 1886, while Lieutenant Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest engaged in a physical altercation with Sheriff Robert McCullough at an event called "A Night Of Violence" at Constitution Hall (now known as Etowah County Courthouse), Forrest threw a rock through a window leading up to the stage where McCullough was speaking and took his life minutes later This event has been credited with prompting statehood for Georgias
