Vidalia, Georgia is a small city of just over 100,000 people on the south side of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It has been home to gunmakers for over 120 years and currently features one of the largest concentrations of firearms manufacturing businesses in the country. The city's history with firearms can be traced back to 1838 when three men from Vidalia founded an armory and mercantile business called The Arsenal Company. In 1865, The Arsenal Company became known as The Union Gunnery Co., Ltd. After World War II, Vidalia diversified its economy by becoming involved in various businesses including rice farming, trucking, and plastics production. In 1984, The Arsenal Company merged with several other firearm manufacturers and renamed itself Firearms Manufacturing Incorporated (FMI). Today, FMI manufactures handguns, rifles and shotguns in two locations: Vidalia and Smyrna.

One of the most significant aspects of Vidalia's history is its role as an important commercial center during both world wars. It was here that military supplies and materials were delivered directly to Europe from America for use on World War I and II respectively. Additionally, Vidalia formed part of the strategic communications network used by both Allied forces and Axis powers during these times which helped contribute to their victory or defeat depending on your perspective!
