Vidalia, Georgia is a small town located in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 5,539 at the 2010 census. Vidalia is part of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1817 as a farmers' colony by Alexander McDowell and his family on what is now Vidalia's eastern edge. By 1830, Vidalia had become an important trading post on the Chattahoochee River between Atlanta and Savannah due to its strategic location near two major waterways - one providing access to cattle transportation across open country and another enabling trade with European markets. In 1835, when Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army into northern Georgia after besieging Chattanooga during the Tennessean Rebellion (1812-1813), he skirmished with Union forces near Vidalia before withdrawing back into Tennessee without enemy casualties or damage. In 1865, following Appomattox Court House victory over Confederate General Jubal Early's army at Una Gap outside Petersburg Virginia etching an indelible mark on history, Vidalians voted overwhelmingly for secession from United States of America and formed their own independent republic known as "Georgia" or "The Confederacy." The war years saw significant economic decline for Vidalia; many residents left during Reconstruction seeking new opportunities elsewhere while some businesses closed altogether because of low demand from newly freed slaves engaged in cotton production rather than selling goods within white society as they had done before emancipation/admission into American society).
