Afterward, industry declined as sugar production increased in neighboring Alabama and Mississippi; however, local farmers continued to produce food crops such as corn and beans until World War II when they switched to growing munitions plants during World War II because there were no other sources for affordable labor nearby. The post-war years were difficult for Valdosta; however, some entrepreneurs started businesses such as a grocery store and aluminum smelters before BeckeyAir Manufacturing Corporation (BAC) arrived in 1955 with plans to create an air traffic control tower downtown which would be used by both airlines flying into Atlanta Airport (ATL)and Delta Airlines flying out of Atlanta Air Terminal (AAL). BAC later merged with American Aviation Corporation (AAL) forming American Airlines Incorporated in 1958 which persists today as one of America's biggest commercial airlines Valdosta experienced rapid growth during Interstate highway construction beginning in 1956 which increased access to jobs across Cobb County while also providing development opportunities for businesses throughout downtown including restaurants/bars/cafes/stores etc., many moving into new buildings constructed along I-85 North within two decades following completion of this interstate project
